A Conversation with Legendary Rock Photographer MICK ROCK

By Lori Zimmer

May 2012

— Mick Rock is the man responsible for preserving the glamour, guts and sexual energy that was part and parcel with rock n roll in the ’70s and ’80s. With his camera, Rock captured Iggy Pop’s cosmic back bends, a thickly kohl-eyed Syd Barrett in his living room, a very young Debbie Harry, and dozens of intimate tour moments with David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust.

The photos are older than me, but they seem new. The glam rock style is still influencing fashion today, thanks in large part to Rock’s epic catalogue of work that went beyond the average rock show documentation, and instead captured snippets of the real lives of rock n roll legends.

It wasn’t just about snapping the perfect image at the decisive moment. Rock’s images are so powerful because they convey a glimpse into the private lives of musicians that have shaped music today, in a time when music waseverything (more than just something to download).

Not to discount the talented musicians of today, but the rock n roll of Rock’s time had the inherent electric energy that only revolution can bring, a new movement that, without the immediate accessibility of today’s world, had a magic to all of those involved. From fans to Bowie, Lou Reed, Queen and the Sex Pistols themselves, music felt like being a part of something special, that only others “in the know” were a part of too.

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood celebrated the opening of his New York art show with new girlfriend Sally Humphreys. The attractive theater producer joined him at the debut of his New York exhibition “Faces, Time and Places” presented by Symbolic Collection in SoHo, followed by an after-party at Jimmy’s Thursday. Wood — who left early to fly to Cleveland to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — bumped into top rock photographer Mick Rock, who cheerfully chastised Wood for leaving but “complimented him on his pretty bird.” Guests included Matthew Modine, Salman Rushdie, Faces drummer Kenny Jones and Symbolic Collection’s Bernie Chase.

Sex, Drugs And Rock Photography

Mick Rock is really his name — though he’s Michael to his mother — and he is exactly what you might imagine a rock photographer to be: tall and hip with shaggy hair. Shaded Ray-Bans, jean jacket, scarf. Oh, and an English accent to boot — so he can drop words like “bloody” and “shag” with allure (though he doesn’t shy from the American equivalents, either).

“In any other era, dogs wouldn’t have pissed on me,” he says. “Thank God for Mick and Keith,” who helped make lanky, messy Englishmen cool. He’s referring to the Rolling Stones, of course.

Now in his 60s, Rock remembers the ’70s well. Or, parts of them. And it goes without saying that the times have changed.

WORDS/INTERVIEW – BOBBY MOZUMDER, IMAGES COURTESY MICK ROCK

Photographer Mick Rock has a great new series at CATM Chelsea Gallery. The “Man Who Shot the 70′s” reaches into the archive of his own iconic photography and tinkers with them using several modern techniques. The result is a series of raw photo-art that explodes with energy while clearly stating his ownership of rock-and-roll photography genre. As there are no rock icons anymore, this series is a great reminder of a time when authentic stars once existed, and that great things had happened to the music and cultural world.

Last night at his THE LEGEND SERIES opening at CATM Gallery, Mick Rock told us the story of working with a young singer that you’ve probably come to know by now.

“A friend of mine called Bleeker Bob (of the Greenwich Village record store) used to bring stray characters and musicians to my Madison Avenue studio. This would have been 1980. And one day Madonna appeared…She wasn’t known, she hadn’t even made a record, she told me she was a dancer. I took a few little test pictures and forgot about them for 20 years. She stuck her tongue out in the photo; she already knew about the camera. I didn’t say anything like ‘stick our tongue out, doll.’ That was purely spontaneous on her part. Who would have thought? But then again, I never really thought about anything. I just rolled with it. I was always on a roll…”
